The 21-bit encoder and FFB 4.0 mean you should feel every kerb and weight shift without any mechanical clatter. A cheap-sounding click does not belong there.

This guide walks you through the fix. You’ll start with quick wins that solve most cases in a few minutes. If those don’t work, we’ll move into deeper checks. Then we’ll show you settings that reduce the sharpest jolts without making everything feel flat. If the click survives all of that, you will know exactly when to stop and what to send to support.

The steps use the same labels you’ll see in Pit House. If a screwdriver’s needed, we’ll call it out.

Normal Sounds vs Real Faults

Not every noise means something’s wrong. The R9 V3 is a direct-drive base, and some sounds are just part of how the motor works. Before you start troubleshooting, rule out the normal stuff.

Normal

  • Low motor hum or faint hiss, especially at idle or when you’re holding the wheel steady.
  • A soft click as you mount or remove the wheel.
  • Periodic rattle when the wheel is removed or a third-party rim is attached — the base is trying to pair. Switch Steering Wheel Access Detection to Automatic in Pit House, then run Calibrate Steering Wheel Automatic Detection in Recovery & Reset to stop it.

Not Normal

  • A sharp click that gets louder with torque or happens every time you cross centre.
  • Knocking you can feel through the rim, especially during countersteering or over kerbs.
  • Grinding or scraping at any angle.

Two quick checks before you go further:

If your noise falls in the not-normal column, try these two tests before moving to the full diagnostic path. They rule out the most common false positives

  1. Drop overall FFB in both Pit House and your sim. If the click fades with less torque, it’s a mechanical fit issue, not a software quirk.
  1. In MOZA Pit House, open Recovery & Reset, set Steering Wheel Access Detection to Automatic, then run Calibrate Steering Wheel Automatic Detection with the wheel removed. If the rattle stops, it was the pairing attempt, not a fault.

If the noise is still there after both checks, move to the five-minute checks below.

Quick Diagnostic Checks

Start here. These four checks narrow the cause without you touching a screwdriver. You’ll know whether you’re dealing with a mechanical fit issue, a software setting, or something that needs support.

1. Check alignment

Remove the wheel. Look at the base shaft. There’s an arrow or triangle marker on it. That arrow should point to the right, roughly horizontal. Line up your wheel’s quick release with the shaft grooves, push straight until you hear and feel a solid click, then twist the locking collar. If the wheel wasn’t aligned before, this might fix it immediately.

2. Check for play

Hold the rim at the 9 o’clock and 3 o’clock positions, then push-pull and wiggle side to side. If you feel any movement between the rim and the quick release plate, the wheel-side mounting screws are loose.

3. Check the mount

Put a hand on the base while you turn the wheel sharply left and right. If the base or mount shifts, tighten all desk clamps or rig bolts. Flex in the mount can make normal vibration sound like clicking.

4. Test whether it changes with torque

Lower overall FFB to 60–70% in both Pit House and your sim, then drive over the same kerbs. If the click fades with less torque, you’re dealing with a mechanical fit issue. If it doesn’t change, you’re likely dealing with a software setting like iRacing’s 360 Hz mode or Wheel LFE. We’ll cover both paths below.

How to Fix It (Step-by-Step)

If the click fades with lower torque, start with the mechanical fixes below. If it doesn’t change, skip to the software checks.

Mechanical Fixes

1. Re-seat with proper alignment

Remove the wheel. Check the base shaft arrow points to the right, roughly horizontal. Push the wheel straight onto the shaft with firm pressure until you hear and feel a solid click. Twist the locking collar. This ensures all six top and four bottom ball bearings lock into the shaft grooves. If even one ball is misaligned, it’ll click every time you cross centre.

2. Tighten the wheel-side screws

If you felt play in the diagnostic check, the wheel-side mounting screws need tightening. On MOZA wheels such as RS, KS, and GS, you’ll need to remove the front cover to access them. Any slack here sounds like a knock during countersteering or over bumps. If you’re using a KS or RS wheel, check for button-box rattle first. It’s a separate issue and can sound similar.

3. Stabilise the mount

If the base shifted during the diagnostic check, add an extra brace or swap to a sturdier plate. Even a small shift under load can sound like a knock.

4. Inspect the quick release

Remove the wheel and inspect the QR collar, springs, and ball tracks. Clean out debris with a dry cloth. If any ball groove looks damaged or a ball bearing is flaking, stop and contact support.

5. Try safer settings

Lower these values in Pit House to reduce sudden spikes:

  • Torque limit: 60–70%
  • Damper: 35–40%
  • Natural Inertia: about 200%
  • Equaliser 10–15 Hz band: 50–100

Test on a familiar track section and adjust a notch at a time.

Software Fixes

6. Check Steering Wheel Access Detection

Open Pit House. Set Steering Wheel Access Detection to Automatic, then run Calibrate Steering Wheel Automatic Detection in Recovery & Reset. This stops false pairing rattles.

7. iRacing-specific checks (if you race there)

Disable the 360 Hz interpolation in app.ini. Check Wheel LFE if you run haptics on the wheel channel. Retest on the same kerb to compare.

8. Calibration and reset

Run a full centre calibration, then perform a soft reset of the base in Pit House. Power cycle the base and PC.

9. Test with a different wheel

If you have another wheel or Quick Release, swap it in. If the click disappears, the problem is with the rim. If it stays, the connection between the base and quick release needs attention.

Last-resort workarounds:

If you still feel a tiny amount of play at the quick release, a very thin plastic shim or a minimal dab of safe lubricant like Super Lube can mask micro-movement. Treat this as a stop-gap. If you need more than a paper-thin shim, the parts don’t fit tightly enough or something’s worn. Time for support.

When to Contact Support

If you’ve worked through the checks and fixes and the click remains, you’re done with DIY. Your mount is rigid, your quick release is aligned, and your settings are dialled in. Time to escalate.

Maintenance and Prevention

Once the base is quiet, keep it that way with a quick check every three months or any time you change rims. Recheck the quick release screws on your rim. If your rim requires the front cover off to reach them, remove it and snug the screws down. Wipe the quick release balls and the shaft grooves with a dry, lint-free cloth. Mount the wheel cleanly, listen for a solid click, and confirm the collar locks. Walk the rig and tighten any bolts that have worked loose.

If you move to a heavier rim or add a button box, treat the first run as a shakedown. Start at about 70% torque. Do a few laps and listen. If everything feels tight and quiet, raise torque gradually. Extra mass exposes tiny amounts of play that a lighter setup hides.

A few simple habits help. Never remove the wheel while FFB is active. The motor can grind and damage the quick release pins if you do. Avoid maximum kerb effects if your desk mount flexes, because the vibration amplifies every rattle. And for everyday driving, leave Steering Wheel Access Detection on Automatic unless you’re testing third-party wheels.
